La Union is often known for its beaches and surf culture, but the province has more to offer beyond the saltwater and the waves. I’ve been to the province twice before, but I’ve never had the chance to explore outside San Juan, particularly Urbiztondo Beach. Thus on this particular trip, we do a couple of side trips.
Our stop on our first day, while waiting for our check-in time, is the Ma-Cho Temple, a Taoist temple nestled on a hill in San Fernando. This serene place of worship is dedicated to the goddess Mazu, who is revered as the protector of seafarers and fishermen.
The temple is a haven of peace and tranquility, offering panoramic views of the West Philippine Sea. We explore the various halls and courtyards, admiring the intricate details of the temple’s design, which includes dragon sculptures, traditional Chinese motifs, and ornate roofs. The temple’s interior is equally captivating, with intricate altars and offerings to Mazu.
A highlight of a visit is the charming pond, where a lonely turtle floats on the water. Visitors can also light incense sticks and make wishes in the temple, creating a serene and spiritual experience.
Our destination the next afternoon is the Baluarte Watchtower in town of Luna. This historical site, also known as the Luna Watchtower, served as a defensive structure during the Spanish colonial period. Built in the 19th century, it once played a crucial role in guarding against pirate attacks.
Standing at the base of the watchtower along with a sizable crowd, we marvel at the impressive stonework and the tower’s formidable appearance. The strategic location provided an excellent vantage point for early warnings of potential threats from the sea.
The Baluarte Watchtower is not just a relic of the past; it’s a living piece of history that showcases the resilience and resourcefulness of the Filipino people. It’s a must-visit destination for history buffs and anyone interested in La Union’s rich heritage.
Our trip even takes an enchanting turn as my sister — Yanyan — and her former coworker — Dani — embark on a golden hour photoshoot with a talented young local photographer, Michelle. The picturesque setting, bathed in the warm hues of the setting sun, came to life under the skillful framing of Michelle. Her passion for photography and her deep connection to the local community add an enriching layer to our experience.
Michelle guides Yanyan and Dani to various vantage points around the watchtower, capturing them in various poses around the tower’s historical details and the breathtaking views of the ocean. Her expertise in capturing the play of light and shadow during the golden hour truly shines as she frames her shots against the watchtower’s intricate stonework.
La Union is undoubtedly a treasure trove of beautiful beaches and exhilarating surf adventures, but our side trips to Ma-Cho Temple in San Fernando and the Baluarte Watchtower in Luna added a new layer of depth to our visit. These cultural and historical sites provided a perfect balance to our beach escapades, making our journey through La Union an enriching and unforgettable experience.
