THE SKY IS gray, occasionally spitting rain. Palm trees by the shore are swaying to the strong winds. The waves, not really big but strong, are crashing to the shore. I climb the ledge overlooking the sea and try to gain a wide-angle perspective of where I am. Except for a couple of souls strolling, the oceanside boulevard feels desolate. Pop music blares from the restaurant row fronting the beach but they’re practically drowned by the howling winds.

I’m in Dipolog City, which isn’t exactly a major destination. Most visitors find their way here either as a stopover on their way to nearby Dapitan City or to spend time in the hotels and conference halls. As the capital of Zamboanga del Norte, however, I’m sure the city has its own charm, with a few notable restaurants and sights that will keep me occupied for the two and a half days I’m here. What’s more, there’s a certain warmth in Dipolog that’s more palpable outside the hustle and bustle of Metro Manila.

Later that evening, on a stroll through the city, Dipolog reveals more of its character. A grill house just a few blocks from my hotel is filling up with locals, but it’s small enough for me to snag a table for myself. I nurse a can of soda, accompanied by a burger and fries, as the night deepens. Despite the loud soundtrack, I find myself at ease, never needing to shout to place my order.

Dipolog has a certain relaxed charm. It’s dense and bustling, but never overwhelming. Even during the day, the streets are walkable, retaining a quaint, compact feel – with tricycles, cars, and simple buildings. At 8 p.m., many of the stores are already closed, giving the city a quiet, almost sleepy vibe.

The following afternoon, with better weather, the seaside boulevard is bustling with more people. Just before sunset, couples stroll arm in arm, teenagers snap photos with their tablets, and children play in the black sand. I could easily spend more days here, walking the same streets, soaking in the same views, and dining at the same restaurants. Like most cities rich in history and culture, Dipolog rewards familiarity. A charming, book-themed café with quirky yet inviting interiors tempts me to reconsider my dinner plans.

Why not? A sugary milk tea seems like the perfect way to begin the evening.
Located in the heart of Zamboanga del Norte, Dipolog City is an underappreciated destination in the Philippines with a unique blend of tranquility and local charm. From the scenic Dipolog Boulevard to historical landmarks like the Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral, this city offers much more than meets the eye.
